About This Collection
- The Model Rural School photograph collection contains images from the Model Rural School located on the First District Normal School campus in Kirksville, MO. The Model Rural School was the brainchild of former Normal School president, John R. Kirk. He designed his notion of the ideal rural schoolhouse, advocated for its building in 1907, and implemented a new curriculum to provide a better education for county children so they could serve the unique needs of their communities. These images show various classroom activities and school furnishings.
- The Margaret Lee (Hoffman) Rhea Photo Album contains 125 photographs of her early teaching assignments, family, friends, and vacations, mostly from the 1910s-1920s. Originally from Paris, MO, Mrs. Rhea, known as Peggy (1893-1967), completed the Elementary Course at the First District Normal School in Kirksville in 1912 and taught for several years in North Dakota and Iowa rural schools.
